Phone Screens vs Video Interviews: What the Data Shows
The debate between phone screens and video interviews has been running since Zoom became a household name during the pandemic. Both have advocates. Phone screens are faster and simpler. Video interviews provide richer signal. But which actually produces better hiring outcomes for Indian IT staffing agencies?
We analyzed data from 2,400 candidate evaluations across 38 Indian staffing agencies using CVPRO between July 2025 and February 2026. Half used primarily phone screens for initial technical evaluation; half used video-based interviews. Here is what we found.
The Metrics We Compared
We evaluated five dimensions:
- Time cost: Total time from scheduling to completion, including coordination overhead
- Evaluation quality: Correlation between screening outcome and client interview success
- Candidate drop-off: Percentage of candidates who abandoned the process before completing the screen
- Interviewer consistency: How much scores varied between different interviewers evaluating similar candidates
- Cost per screen: Fully loaded cost including technology, interviewer time, and coordination
Finding 1: Video Interviews Take 40% Longer to Coordinate
The biggest practical difference is logistics. Phone screens require only a phone number and a time slot. Video interviews require a stable internet connection, a quiet environment, and functional audio/video on both sides.
Average coordination time:
- Phone screen: 8 minutes (send WhatsApp, confirm time, call)
- Video interview: 14 minutes (send link, troubleshoot tech issues, reschedule due to connectivity)
In India specifically, connectivity issues are a significant factor. 23% of scheduled video interviews required rescheduling at least once due to technical problems, compared to 7% for phone screens. For candidates in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, the disparity is even larger.
Finding 2: Video Interviews Predict Client Success 18% Better
Despite the coordination overhead, video interviews produce more accurate evaluations. We measured this by tracking how often the screening outcome (pass/fail) matched the subsequent client interview outcome.
Screening-to-client alignment rate:
- Phone screen: 62% alignment (candidates who passed phone screen also passed client interview)
- Video interview: 73% alignment

The 11-percentage-point improvement from video interviews is statistically significant. The likely explanation: video interviews capture non-verbal communication cues, presentation skills, and confidence signals that phone screens miss. Finding 3: Candidate Drop-Off is 2x Higher for Video
This is the hidden cost of video interviews. Among candidates invited to a screening step:
- Phone screen completion rate: 84%
- Video interview completion rate: 71%
- QBank assessment completion rate: 78%
13% more candidates drop off from video interviews than phone screens. The reasons candidates cited include: inconvenient scheduling (34%), connectivity concerns (28%), camera anxiety (19%), and privacy concerns about video recording (19%).
For staffing agencies, this drop-off rate is costly. If you invite 20 candidates to a video screen and only 14 complete it, you have lost 6 potential matches. In a tight market for in-demand skills, those 6 candidates may accept offers from competitors who used faster, less friction-heavy screening methods.
Finding 4: Interviewer Consistency Varies Significantly
We measured inter-rater reliability by having two interviewers independently evaluate the same candidate (using recorded sessions). The question: do different interviewers give the same candidate the same score?
Inter-rater reliability (Kappa score, 0-1 scale):
- Phone screen: 0.52 (moderate agreement)
- Video interview: 0.58 (moderate agreement)
- AI scoring (CVPRO): 1.0 (perfect consistency by definition)
- QBank assessment: 0.92 (near-perfect, minor variation in subjective scoring)
Both human methods show only moderate consistency, meaning the same candidate might pass or fail depending on which interviewer they get. AI-based evaluation eliminates this variability entirely, which is one of its strongest arguments as a screening method.
Finding 5: Cost Per Screen Comparison
Fully loaded cost per candidate screened:
- Phone screen: ₹350-500 (interviewer time + coordination + phone costs)
- Video interview: ₹500-750 (interviewer time + coordination + platform cost + longer duration)

The cost difference is stark. Video interviews cost 5-15x more than AI-based screening per candidate. Even phone screens cost 3.5-10x more.
The Hybrid Model: Best of All Worlds
The data suggests that the optimal approach is not choosing one method exclusively but combining them strategically:

When to Use Each Method
- AI + QBank only (skip human screen): High-volume requirements, junior roles, purely technical positions, remote contractors where communication requirements are minimal.
- AI + QBank + Phone screen: Mid-level technical roles, candidates in tier-2/3 cities where video connectivity is unreliable, situations where a quick conversation adds value but logistics matter.
- AI + QBank + Video interview: Senior roles, client-facing positions, leadership roles, situations where presentation and communication skills are critical to the job.
Technology Considerations for Indian Agencies

- Audio-only fallback when video drops
- Recording capability for later review (with candidate consent, per DPDPA)
- Mobile-first interface (majority of Indian candidates use smartphones)
- Integration with your ATS to avoid manual data entry
